George Asakura

Description
George Asakura is a Japanese manga artist born on May 11, 1974. She took her pen name from one of the title characters in the classic anime series Gatchaman. Asakura made her professional debut in 1995 with the short story Punky Cake Junkie, published in Kodansha's Bessatsu Friend DX Juliet magazine. She is the recipient of the 2005 Kodansha Manga Award in the shōjo category for her series A Perfect Day for Love Letters.

Asakura is known for a career that spans multiple demographics and publishers. Her body of work includes series such as Knock Your Heart Out!, Piece of Cake, Heibon Punch, Oboreru Knife, and Teke Teke Rendez-vous. A recurring aspect of her career has been the adaptation of her work into other media. A Perfect Day for Love Letters was adapted into a live-action film, as was her series Heibon Punch in 2008.

She is the original creator of the manga Dance Dance Danseur, which began serialization in Shogakukan's seinen manga magazine Weekly Big Comic Spirits in September 2015. The series received an anime television adaptation produced by the studio MAPPA, which aired from April to June 2022. Asakura's role as the original creator is the principal credit connecting her to the anime. In 2024 and 2025, the Dance Dance Danseur manga went on hiatus as Asakura underwent and recovered from two brain surgeries. Throughout her career, her work has been characterized by a distinct and edgy style of storytelling that often blends elements of everyday life with the fantastic and bittersweet.
