Jun Mochizuki

Description
Jun Mochizuki is a Japanese manga artist, born on December 22 in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. She is recognized as a prominent creator in the fantasy genre, known for her distinctive gothic aesthetic and intricate narrative style.

Mochizuki began her professional career while still a student, debuting with a one-shot version of Pandora Hearts in 2004. Her first serialized work was Crimson-Shell, which was published in Square Enix's Monthly GFantasy magazine from September 2005 to February 2006 and later compiled into a single volume. She subsequently launched her breakthrough series, Pandora Hearts, in the same magazine in May 2006. The series ran for twenty-four volumes until its conclusion in March 2015 and became a significant success, leading to a twenty-five episode anime television adaptation produced by Studio XEBEC that aired in 2009. Following the completion of Pandora Hearts, Mochizuki began her next major work, The Case Study of Vanitas (also known as Vanitas no Carte), which started serialization in Monthly Gangan Joker on December 22, 2015, and remains ongoing. This series received a twenty-four episode anime adaptation by studio Bones, broadcast in two cours from July 2021 to April 2022.

Mochizuki's artistic identity is characterized by a strong gothic fantasy style, often blending elements of mystery, action, and tragedy. Her works frequently incorporate themes of identity, existence, and hidden truths, with narratives that explore characters' true natures and the recovery of lost selves. She draws inspiration from European literature and folklore, with Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland notably influencing Pandora Hearts, while The Case Study of Vanitas is set in a steampunk-inspired nineteenth-century Paris and explores vampire mythology. Mochizuki has cited Hiromu Arakawa, creator of Fullmetal Alchemist, as a primary inspiration and the reason she chose to submit her work to Square Enix. Her artistic process traditionally involves analog methods, utilizing Copic markers and watercolor for her illustrations without computer processing, though she has also created digital artwork. She often represents herself in author notes and omakes as a black cat with a pink mustache.

Beyond her manga serializations, Mochizuki has contributed as an illustrator for light novels, including Pandora Hearts: Caucus Race and Rolan the Forgotten King, and has released multiple art books collecting her illustrations, such as Jun Mochizuki Artworks: Pandora Hearts odds and ends and Pandora Hearts There is. She served as a guest of honor at Japan Expo in Paris in 2017, reflecting her international recognition and the popularity of her works in markets such as France.
