Onigunsō

Description
Onigunsō is a Japanese manga creator, illustrator, and designer best known as the author and artist of the manga series Mononogatari, which was adapted into the anime Malevolent Spirits: Mononogatari. The creator's birthday is recorded as July 8, though the year of birth is not publicly documented.

Onigunsō began serializing Mononogatari on April 15, 2014, in Shueisha's Miracle Jump, a seinen manga magazine. When Miracle Jump ceased publication, the series was transferred to Ultra Jump, where it continued from January 19, 2016, until its conclusion on June 19, 2023. The complete series was collected into sixteen tankōbon volumes. The manga is also known under the title Spirits Seekers in some territories. In addition to Mononogatari, Onigunsō is credited as the creator of the manga series Hitogatana.

The story of Mononogatari centers on Hyoma Kunato, a young exorcist who despises tsukumogami, spirits that inhabit old objects, after one robbed him of something precious. He is sent to live with Botan Nagatsuki, a young woman who coexists peacefully with benevolent tsukumogami, forcing Hyoma to confront his hatred. The manga blends action, supernatural fantasy, and themes of vengeance versus coexistence.

An anime adaptation produced by Bandai Namco Pictures, titled Malevolent Spirits: Mononogatari, aired in two seasons. The first season ran from January 9 to March 27, 2023, and the second season aired from July 3 to September 18, 2023, for a total of twenty-four episodes. The anime brought Onigunsō's work to a wider international audience, with the series streaming on platforms including Crunchyroll. Onigunsō's artistic identity is defined by detailed character designs and a focus on Japanese folklore elements, particularly the concept of tsukumogami and the moral ambiguity of supernatural beings. The creator's work holds significance in the manga industry as a successful example of a long-running seinen series that navigated a magazine transfer while maintaining its audience, ultimately receiving a complete anime adaptation.
