Tōru Naomura
Description
Tōru Naomura is a Japanese manga artist and illustrator known for his detailed art style and character designs. His professional career is closely tied to Square Enix’s Monthly Gangan Joker magazine, where the majority of his serialized works have been published.
Naomura’s first major serialized work was Lost Paradise, a fantasy manga that ran from 2009 to 2011 and was compiled into six volumes. The series follows a young girl who challenges a male-dominated virtual reality game, establishing a recurring theme in his work of strong-willed heroines confronting oppressive systems. Following this, he served as the series composer for the manga adaptation of the anime Tari Tari, which was published in two volumes in 2012.
He is best known for his work on the Kakegurui franchise. Beginning in 2014, Naomura has served as the illustrator for Kakegurui - Compulsive Gambler, a series created by original author Homura Kawamoto. His dynamic and expressive artwork is central to the series’ identity, depicting the high-stakes gambling and psychological drama of the fictional Hyakkaou Private Academy. He also illustrated the spin-off manga, Kakegurui Twin, which focuses on the character Mary Saotome’s earlier years at the academy.
Within the Kakegurui franchise, Naomura’s role is specifically that of the illustrator, working from Kawamoto’s story and concepts. Both Kakegurui and Kakegurui Twin were later adapted into anime series, bringing his character designs to animated form. Naomura’s artistic identity is defined by his intricate linework, expressive character art, and a distinct visual style that effectively conveys tension and psychological intensity, making him a key creative force behind the success of the Kakegurui series.
