Shingo Natsume
Description
Shingo Natsume is a Japanese anime director, animator, and screenwriter born in Aomori Prefecture in 1980. Growing up in a region with limited television stations, he primarily read manga, including series like Dragon Ball and Slam Dunk, before moving to Tokyo to attend a technical school focused on visual arts and 3D digital imagery. After graduating, he worked as an assistant designer at the video game studio Overworks, a subsidiary of Sega, contributing to games such as Sakura Wars. Inspired by the animated cinematics, he left the game industry to pursue a career in traditional animation.
Natsume began working as an animator in 2003, gaining experience at studios like J.C. Staff and Gonzo. He worked as a key animator on Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood in 2009 and its subsequent film, The Sacred Star of Milos. His directorial debut came with the OVA Hori-san to Miyamura-kun in 2012. The following year, he was selected to direct his first full television series, Space Dandy, which aired in 2014. Under the general direction of Shinichirō Watanabe, Natsume was given significant creative freedom, allowing him to cultivate a distinct visual style. Following this success, he directed the critically acclaimed first season of One-Punch Man in 2015, which brought him wider international recognition. He continued to direct series such as ACCA: 13-Territory Inspection Dept. in 2017 and Boogiepop and Others in 2019.
In 2021, Natsume created his first original anime series, Sonny Boy, for which he served as the director, screenwriter, and original creator. The series was nominated for Anime of the Year at the Crunchyroll Anime Awards, and Natsume was nominated for Best Director. Sonny Boy is noted for its abstract storytelling, use of silence, and philosophical themes concerning free will versus order, reflecting his ambition to move beyond conventional internal monologues and express emotion through visual direction alone. He later directed the sequel series Tatami Time Machine Blues in 2022.
His first original feature-length anime film, currently titled ghost, has been announced for a theatrical release in 2027. For this project, Natsume will serve as director and screenwriter, with animation production handled by Madhouse, the studio behind many of his previous works. The film is described as exploring the genuine but inexpressible feelings that reside within everyone's heart, following a young girl named Nike who rebels against the absurdity of the world. The production reunites Natsume with character designer Norifumi Kugai and original character designer Natsume Ono, with whom he previously collaborated on ACCA: 13-Territory Inspection Dept.
Throughout his career, Natsume has been recognized for his versatile and creative direction, capable of handling both comedy and drama. He is known for his dynamic action sequences, vivid color palettes, and a talent for attracting and coordinating skilled animators, including many who worked on Sonny Boy. He is often discussed as a bridge between an older generation of innovative directors and a new generation of visual creators. His major influences include the television series Neon Genesis Evangelion for its sense of action and mechanical detail, and the film FLCL for its visual creativity and unique atmosphere.
