Kei Sazane

Description
Kei Sazane is a Japanese male light novel author who made his professional debut by winning an Honorable Mention at the 18th Fantasia Taisho Grand Prize for his work Tasogareiro no Uta Tsukai Volume 1: Evhe Smiles at Dawn. He has since built a substantial career as an original creator, with many of his light novel series adapted into manga and anime. Sazane has also served as a selection committee member for the Fantasia Taisho awards beginning with the 33rd edition.

Sazane developed a fondness for novels, manga, and video games during his childhood, with a particular interest in mystery novels. He has cited the light novel series Fortune Quest by Mishio Fukasawa and Slayers by Hajime Kamisaka as influential early encounters that shaped his desire to write. He began writing novels by hand during his first year of college and continued using a laptop computer in his second year. He has named Yoshinobu Akita as a writer he admires, and he started drawing illustrations on platforms like Pixix to help communicate his creative vision to professional illustrators.

As an original creator, Sazane is known for producing multiple long-running light novel series that frequently receive manga adaptations and anime productions. His notable original works include the Fantasia Bunko series Kimi to Boku no Saigo no Senjou, Aruiwa Sekai ga Hajimaru Seisen (known in English as Our Last Crusade or the Rise of a New World), which began publication in 2017 and has extended to multiple volumes. He is also the creator of Naze Boku no Sekai wo Daremo Oboeteinai no ka? (Why Nobody Remembers My World?), published under MF Bunko J from July 2017 to August 2020 across nine total volumes. Another major work is Kami wa Game ni Ueteiru (Gods' Games We Play), which started serialization in 2021 under MF Bunko J.

Before achieving mainstream anime adaptations, Sazane established himself with earlier light novel series including Tasogareiro no Uta Tsukai (A Song of Twilight), which ran for ten volumes from 2007 to 2009 with illustrations by Takeoka Miho, and Hyouketsu Kyokai no Eden (Ice结界 Eden), which ran for thirteen volumes from 2009 to 2014 with illustrations by Kasukabe Akira. He also wrote the five-volume series Fukanzen Shinseiki Ileeze (Incomplete Godly Machine Iris) from 2011 to 2013 and S.I.R.E.N. from 2014 to 2016.

The adaptation history of Sazane's works accelerated significantly in the 2020s. Our Last Crusade or the Rise of a New World received its first anime adaptation in Fall 2020, produced by studio Silver Link. A second season aired in July 2024. The year 2024 marked a notable concentration of adaptations, with three of his series airing as anime within the same year. Gods' Games We Play premiered in April 2024, produced by Liden Films. Why Nobody Remembers My World? premiered in July 2024, produced by studio Project No.9 and directed by Tatsuma Minamikawa, with scripts by Satoru Sugizawa and character designs by Hiromi Kato. The manga adaptation of Why Nobody Remembers My World? began serialization in Kadokawa's Monthly Comic Alive magazine in February 2018 with art by Arikan.

Recurring themes in Sazane's work include fantasy worldbuilding involving conflicts between multiple races or factions, protagonists who must navigate altered or forgotten histories, and romantic subplots between characters from opposing sides. Reviewers have noted that his works often employ a structure where background events and previous generations of characters are given substantial development that informs the main storyline, a technique particularly evident in his earlier series such as Tasogareiro no Uta Tsukai. His series Our Last Crusade has been described as following a Romeo and Juliet inspired framework within a fantasy setting. Why Nobody Remembers My World? centers on a protagonist who finds his world overwritten into an alternate timeline where humanity never existed, forcing him to restore the original history.

In terms of industry significance, Sazane has achieved sustained output across multiple publishing imprints including Fujimi Fantasia Bunko, MF Bunko J, NOVEL 0, and GAGAGA Bunko. The concentration of three anime adaptations of his works in 2024 indicates his established position within the light novel industry and his appeal to anime producers seeking fantasy content with existing fan bases. His works have been translated and published internationally, with English releases of series such as Our Last Crusade or the Rise of a New World, Why Nobody Remembers My World?, and Gods' Games We Play available through publishers including Yen Press. He attended the 10th Comic Exhibition in Taiwan in 2009 for a signing event, marking his first trip abroad.
