John DiMaggio

Description
John DiMaggio is an American voice actor recognized for his extensive and versatile work in animation, video games, and film. Born on September 4, 1968, and raised in North Plainfield, New Jersey, he developed an interest in performance early on, participating in theater during high school and later studying at Rutgers University. Before focusing solely on voice acting, DiMaggio worked as a stand-up comedian, an experience that helped cultivate a sense of fearlessness he would bring to his character work.

DiMaggio's voice acting career, which began in the mid-1990s, has grown to include hundreds of credits across various media. He is widely known for iconic roles in Western animation, such as Bender in Futurama, Jake the Dog in Adventure Time, and Dr. Drakken in Kim Possible. His deep, resonant, and highly adaptable voice has also made him a frequent contributor to English dubs of Japanese anime. His work in this area dates back to some of the most influential films of the genre. One of his earliest notable anime roles was providing the voice of Gonza in the English language version of Hayao Miyazaki's acclaimed film Princess Mononoke. He has also lent his voice to other prominent anime titles, including characters in Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, the Studio Ghibli film Pom Poko, and the English adaptation of Castle in the Sky. In 2022, DiMaggio voiced the character Yasuji Kumagaya in the English dub of the Japanese animated film Drifting Home, a supernatural drama about a group of children who find themselves adrift at sea on an old apartment building.

Throughout his long career, DiMaggio has frequently collaborated with a core group of fellow voice actors. He has worked alongside Grey DeLisle on numerous projects more than any other actor, with their collaborations numbering well over one hundred. He has also frequently performed with Kevin Michael Richardson, Fred Tatasciore, Tom Kenny, and Dee Bradley Baker, among many others. This network of regular collaborators forms a staple of the voice acting community in Los Angeles.

DiMaggio's contributions to the field have been recognized with industry accolades. He received an Annie Award for outstanding individual achievement for voice acting in an animated television production for his work on the Futurama episode Bendless Love. Beyond performing, he has also contributed to the appreciation of his craft as an executive producer and narrator of the 2013 documentary I Know That Voice, which explores the world of professional voice acting. In 2022, he was at the center of public contract negotiations regarding the revival of Futurama, where his initial hold-out for higher pay for the cast brought significant attention to compensation issues within the voice acting industry.
