Sekina Aoi
Description
Sekina Aoi, also known by the romanized name Aoi Sekina, is a Japanese novelist recognized as the original creator behind several notable light novel series that have been adapted into anime and manga. Born on August 11, 1982, in Hokkaido, Japan, Aoi is a male writer who began his professional career in 2005 after submitting a manuscript for the 17th Fantasia Long Novel Grand Prize. His entry, Material Ghost, won an award for outstanding work, leading to his formal debut as a published author in 2006 with the release of that same series.
Aoi's bibliography is composed primarily of series published under the Fujimi Fantasia Bunko imprint. Following Material Ghost, which ran for six volumes, he achieved significant commercial success with the Seitokai no Ichizon series, known in English as Student Council's Discretion. This series, which started in 2008, became a cornerstone of his career and is notable for its extensive length, comprising twenty-one volumes published across multiple sub-series. The main narrative, The Student Council's议事录, was complemented by side-story volumes and sequel series that concluded in 2013.
The popularity of Student Council's Discretion led directly to its adaptation into an anime. The first television anime season aired from October to December 2009. This was followed by a second season, titled Student Council's Discretion Lv.2, which was broadcast from January to March 2013. These productions cemented Aoi's status as an original creator whose work was suitable for multi-media expansion.
Between 2013 and 2015, Aoi wrote My Hero, an eight-volume fantasy series. However, his next major success came with Gamers!, a light novel series that began serialization online in 2014 before its first print volume was released in March 2015. The series concluded in October 2019, totaling fifteen volumes, which include twelve main stories and three collections of short stories. Gamers! centers on a group of high school students whose shared hobby of video games leads to a series of romantic entanglements and comedic misunderstandings. This series was adapted into a manga and also into a twelve-episode television anime that aired from July to September 2017. Aoi is also credited with the original story for the web anime Tales of Luminaria: The Fateful Crossroad in 2022.
His creative identity is strongly tied to romantic comedies set in high school, often featuring dialogue-driven narratives. The afterword of the final Gamers! volume provides insight into his working methods, where he discusses how the series began without a long-term plan and evolved organically from a one-chapter story. He is also known for writing lengthy afterwords, a habit he acknowledges began with the Student Council's Discretion series. In late 2022, Aoi began a new serialized manga, Boku no Suki na Hito ga Suki na Hito (The Person I Like Likes Someone), in Hakusensha's Young Animal Zero magazine, continuing his focus on romantic comedy narratives.
