Kazuki Akane was born on March 24, 1962, in Osaka, Japan. He is an anime director and screenwriter known for his work on several original television series and films. Akane began his career at the renowned studio Sunrise, where he gained experience working on major franchises such as Mobile Suit Gundam and Ronin Warriors. His early roles included production runner and assistant director on various projects, which provided a foundation for his later directorial work.

Akane made his directorial debut with the 1995 theatrical film KAZU&YASU: Hero ni Umareta Otoko. The following year, he directed his first television series, The Vision of Escaflowne, a fantasy mecha anime that remains one of his most recognized works. After leaving Sunrise in the early 2000s, Akane worked extensively with the studio Satelight. His output as an original creator is significant. He is credited as the original creator, director, and screenwriter for the science fiction crime series Heat Guy J, which aired from 2002 to 2003. The story follows a young officer and his powerful android partner as they maintain order in a futuristic metropolis. He also served as the original creator, director, and series composer for the 2005 science fiction series Noein: To Your Other Self.

Beyond his original creations, Akane has directed adaptations of existing properties. He helmed the 2008 television remake Birdy the Mighty Decode, based on the manga by Yuuki Masami. From 2012 to 2016, he directed and wrote the original video animation series Code Geass: Akito the Exiled, a spin-off of the popular Code Geass franchise. In 2019, he returned to original television anime with Stars Align, for which he served as director and screenwriter. Akane has also contributed storyboards to a wide array of acclaimed series, including Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, and Ergo Proxy. A manga adaptation of Heat Guy J, illustrated by Chiaki Ogishima, was published by Kodansha in 2003. Throughout his career, Akane has frequently taken on multiple creative roles for a single project, often handling direction, scriptwriting, and series composition himself.
