Kurokata
Description
Kurokata is the original creator of the light novel, manga, and anime series The Wrong Way to Use Healing Magic. The series began as a web novel serialized online in March 2014 on the user-generated novel website Shōsetsuka ni Narō. The work was among the early titles featured on that platform. The story follows Ken Usato, a high school student who is accidentally transported to another world along with two classmates who were summoned as heroes. Usato discovers he possesses the rare ability to use healing magic and is recruited into a rescue team, where he undergoes intense training that uses healing magic in unconventional ways.
The web novel was later acquired by Media Factory, which published twelve light novel volumes under its MF Books imprint from March 25, 2016, to March 25, 2020. The light novels feature illustrations by artist KeG. A sequel light novel series, The Wrong Way to Use Healing Magic Returns, began publication on December 25, 2023. A manga adaptation illustrated by Reki Kugayama began serialization in Kadokawa Shoten’s Comp Ace magazine on April 26, 2017, and is ongoing. Both the light novel and manga are licensed in English by One Peace Books.
An anime television adaptation produced by Studio Add and Shin-Ei Animation aired from January 5 to March 29, 2024. At Otakon 2024, it was announced that the anime would receive a second season. During a panel at the same convention, Kurokata appeared alongside the anime’s producer and director to discuss the series. Kurokata expressed that seeing his creation adapted into animation was an emotional experience, particularly watching the protagonist Usato in motion. When asked about his involvement with the English localization of his works, Kurokata stated that he gives no specific instructions to translators and trusts them to handle the adaptation professionally.
The series is categorized within the isekai genre, which involves characters transported to another world. Kurokata’s work blends action, adventure, comedy, and fantasy elements. The story distinguishes itself by focusing on a protagonist who uses healing magic in offensive and unconventional ways rather than following traditional hero tropes. The anime production team emphasized avoiding excessive fan service and gore compared to other contemporary isekai titles.
