Atto
Description
Atto is a Japanese manga artist whose professional career began with work published in the magazine Monthly Comic Alive. His debut work was the series Little Devil Meringue, which started as an eight-page four-panel manga in the December 2007 issue of the magazine and continued as an irregularly serialized feature until 2009. During this early period, he also published single-chapter works, including Tokotoko and Yume no Yume in 2008, and The Fuji Family's Sunday in 2009.
Atto is best known as the creator of Non Non Biyori, the manga series that forms the basis for the anime works for which he is most widely recognized. The series began serialization in Monthly Comic Alive in November 2009. It drew from elements present in his earlier short works, Tokotoko and Yume no Yume, which served as its prototypes. Non Non Biyori concluded its main serialization in the April 2021 issue of the magazine, after more than eleven years of publication. A short sequel series, Non Non Biyori Remember, was serialized from 2021 to 2022.
The original manga was adapted into a multimedia franchise that includes multiple anime television series and a theatrical film. Atto is credited as the original story creator for the first anime series, Non Non Biyori, which aired in 2013, as well as its sequel, Non Non Biyori Repeat, which aired in 2015. He holds the same credit for the third television season, Non Non Biyori Nonstop, which aired in 2021, and for the animated film, Non Non Biyori Vacation, which was released in 2018.
Beyond his own creations, Atto has contributed to the anime industry in other capacities. He provided the original character designs for the anime series High School Fleet and its subsequent theatrical film. He also worked on design elements for the video game Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Additionally, his artistic contributions appear in official anthology comics for other popular series, such as The Pet Girl of Sakurasou, Is the Order a Rabbit?, and Girls' Last Tour.
The thematic identity of Atto’s most famous work is rooted in the slice-of-life genre, focusing on the peaceful, often humorous daily routines of its characters. Non Non Biyori is noted for its serene depiction of rural life, centering on a small group of students in a combined elementary and middle school branch in the countryside. This focus on atmosphere, character interaction, and the gentle passage of time defines his most significant artistic contribution.
