Mizuki Kawashita
Description
Mizuki Kawashita is a Japanese manga artist born on August 30, 1971 in Shizuoka Prefecture. She began her career in the early 1990s under the pen name Mikan Momokuri, initially creating works for girls' manga magazines and the yaoi magazine June. Under this pseudonym, she produced titles such as Sora no Seibun and Akane-chan Over Drive. In the early 2000s, she began publishing under her real name, Mizuki Kawashita, and shifted her focus to romantic comedy series serialized in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine.
Her first series for Weekly Shonen Jump was Lilim Kiss in 2001, which was collected in two volumes. She achieved significant commercial success with her next series, Strawberry 100%, which was serialized from 2002 to 2005 and compiled into nineteen volumes. The story follows a boy caught in a romantic triangle with multiple female classmates, a theme that resonated with readers. Strawberry 100% was adapted into an anime television series produced by studio Madhouse, which aired in 2005, as well as several original video animation (OVA) episodes.
Following the conclusion of Strawberry 100%, Kawashita created Hatsukoi Limited, serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump from 2007 to 2008 and collected in four volumes. This series, which explores multiple intertwining first love stories among a cast of middle school and high school students, was adapted into a twelve-episode anime television series by studio J.C. Staff that aired in 2009. Her other manga works include Anedoki, serialized in 2009 and 2010, and the two-volume series G-Maru Edition published in Jump Comics and Jump Comics SQ. In 2013, she collaborated with writer Motohito Osaki on the historical comedy series Te to Kuchi. She later returned to her Mikan Momokuri pen name for Gunjō ni Siren, which was serialized from 2015 to 2020 on Shueisha's Shonen Jump+ online platform.
Kawashita is recognized for her distinct artistic style, characterized by transparent colors and soft, thin pen lines. Her work is particularly noted for the portrayal of female characters, with a focus on expressive designs and detailed figure drawing. As a female creator working within the shonen demographic, her perspective on romantic comedy and character design has contributed to her distinctive identity within the industry. She continues to be recognized for her influence on the romantic comedy genre in Shonen Jump, with Strawberry 100% remaining one of the magazine's most notable romance series of the 2000s.
