Utako Yukihiro

Description
Utako Yukihiro is a Japanese manga artist, illustrator, and character designer known primarily for her work in the shoujo and josei genres. She is best recognized as the illustrator of the manga series Devils and Realist, which also received an anime adaptation.

Yukihiro’s career includes both original creations and adaptations of existing properties. She provided the illustrations for the manga adaptation of the otome game Uta no Prince-sama. Her role as an original character designer is a significant part of her portfolio, most notably for the B-Project multimedia franchise, which itself inspired two anime series. She also served as the original character designer for the Bonjour Sweet Love Patisserie anime and the mystery series Housekishou Richard-shi no Nazo Kantei.

Beyond illustration, Yukihiro has also co-created original manga series. She wrote and illustrated Shounen Oujo and the one-shot Bonjour Sweet Love Patisserie. She is also credited as the writer and artist for the series Kare ni Irai shite wa ikemasen. Another notable work is Mimic Royal Princess, on which she served as both co-writer and illustrator.

Several recurring themes and aesthetic choices appear throughout her body of work. A significant portion of her projects, including Uta no Prince-sama, B-Project, and Bonjour Sweet Love Patisserie, are set in specialized academies or the entertainment industry and feature narratives centered on a single female protagonist interacting with a cast of attractive male characters. Her other works often explore supernatural and historical fantasy elements, as seen in Devils and Realist, which follows a pragmatic young nobleman involved in demonic politics, and Touken Ranbu Online Anthology, based on the popular browser game about personified historical swords. Themes of complex interpersonal relationships and identity are also present in works like Shounen Oujo, a story about a boy forced to live disguised as a princess, and Kare ni Irai shite wa ikemasen, which features a detective with empathic abilities.

Utako Yukihiro holds a notable position in the industry as a creator who bridges manga, anime, and multimedia franchises. Her work as the original character designer for B-Project highlights her significance in the development of cross-platform projects that combine music, games, and anime. Her consistent presence at major international conventions, such as being a guest at Anime Expo in 2019, underscores her recognition and popularity with audiences outside of Japan. The long-running serialization of Devils and Realist, which was published in fifteen collected volumes from 2009 to 2018, further cements her reputation as a prolific and enduring creator in the manga industry.
