Tōru Toba
Description
Toru Toba is the original creator of the light novel series The Genius Prince’s Guide to Raising a Nation Out of Debt (Hey, How About Treason?), known in Japanese as Tensai Ōji no Akaji Kokka Saisei Jutsu ~Sō da, Baikoku Shiyō~. This series serves as the foundation for both a manga adaptation and an anime television series, establishing Toba as the originating author of this multimedia franchise.
The original light novel series began as a web novel on the user-generated platform Shōsetsuka ni Narō in December 2017 before being acquired for print publication. SB Creative released the first volume in print under its GA Bunko imprint on May 12, 2018, with the series continuing to be published with illustrations by fal_maro. The light novel has been licensed for English release in North America by Yen Press. The story follows Prince Wein Salema Arbalest, the young ruler of the small, debt-ridden Kingdom of Natra, who secretly wishes to sell his country and retire, only to find that his schemes to achieve this goal consistently result in unexpected successes that strengthen his nation.
The manga adaptation, for which Toru Toba is credited as the original author, began serialization in October 2019. The manga is illustrated by Emuda and is published digitally through Square Enix’s Manga UP! magazine. An anime television series adaptation produced by Yokohama Animation Laboratory aired from January 11 to March 29, 2022, spanning 12 episodes. For the anime, Toba is credited as the original creator, with Makoto Tamagawa serving as director and Deko Akao handling series composition.
