Takahiro Ōba
Description
Takahiro Ōba is a Japanese manga artist known for his work as an illustrator across several series, most notably as the artist for the manga High-Rise Invasion. Born in Hiroshima Prefecture, Ōba began pursuing a career as a manga artist while in middle school. He made his professional debut at the age of nineteen in 1998, when his submission Friends received an honorable mention in the 60th Weekly Shōnen Magazine Rookie Awards and was subsequently published in Magazine FRESH. Early in his career, he worked as an assistant to fellow manga artist Masaharu Inoue.
Ōba's first serialized work was Stand By Me, which ran in Weekly Shōnen Magazine in 2008. In 2010, he illustrated the manga adaptation of Box!, a novel by Naoki Hyakuta, which was serialized in Magazine SPECIAL. However, his most widely recognized work is High-Rise Invasion, a horror suspense manga written by Tsuina Miura. The series was serialized online in DeNA's Manga Box app from December 2013 to April 2019 and later compiled into twenty-one tankōbon volumes by Kodansha. A sequel titled High-Rise Invasion Arrive, again with Ōba as illustrator and Miura as writer, was serialized in Kodansha's Magazine Pocket from July 2019 to April 2021.
The success of High-Rise Invasion led to an original net animation adaptation produced by studio Zero-G, which streamed worldwide on Netflix in February 2021. This adaptation marked a significant milestone in Ōba's career, bringing his visual work to an international audience. Following this, he illustrated A Psycho's World, written by Ryuichi I, serialized in Magazine Pocket from September 2021 to June 2022. In 2023, he began illustrating Konno Chika no Fujou na Nichijou, a spin-off of Daisuke Watanabe's series Gedō no Uta, serialized in Young King. As of 2025, he is the illustrator for Doku o Kurabawa Sakura made, written by Majuro Kaname.
Throughout his career, Takahiro Ōba has worked primarily as an illustrator in collaboration with various writers, rather than creating original stories of his own. His artistic identity is closely tied to his ability to visually realize suspenseful, action-oriented narratives, as demonstrated most prominently in High-Rise Invasion. While not a household name, his consistent work across multiple series for major publishers like Kodansha and his involvement in a Netflix anime adaptation establish him as a competent and reliable figure in the manga industry.
