Kumanano
Description
Kumanano is a Japanese author recognized as the original creator of the light novel, manga, and anime series Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear. The creator began writing the story as a web novel on the user-generated site Shōsetsuka ni Narō on October 13, 2014. The series was later acquired for traditional publication, and the first light novel volume was released on May 29, 2015, by the publisher Shufu to Seikatsu Sha under their PASH! Books imprint. The light novel series features illustrations by the artist 029.
The success of the light novels led to a manga adaptation, which began serialization on the Comic PASH! website on March 28, 2018, with artwork provided by Sergei. The series has also expanded into multiple manga spin-offs, including Kuma kuma kuma bear ~ kyō mo kuma kuma biyori ~ with art by Yukinori Satō and Kuma kuma kuma bear gaiden ~ Yuna no yorimichi techō ~ with art by Rinen Takizawa. An anime television series adaptation produced by the studio EMT Squared premiered on October 7, 2020. A second season aired from April 3 to June 19, 2023, bringing the total number of episodes across both seasons to twenty-four.
Thematically, Kumanano's work in Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear blends the isekai genre with comedy and slice-of-life elements. The story follows a protagonist who is transported into a fantasy game world while wearing an overpowered but embarrassing bear costume. A recurring element in the creator's work is the use of bear-themed abilities and items as central to the narrative and character identity. The series is noted for its lighthearted tone, focusing on the protagonist's daily adventures, cooking, and interactions with a cast of younger female characters rather than high-stakes drama.
Kumanano is a significant figure as an example of a successful web novel author who transitioned to professional publication and multimedia adaptation. The Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear franchise has seen sustained publication, with the light novel series exceeding twenty volumes and the main manga series reaching thirteen volumes as of late 2025. The work has been licensed for English release in North America by Seven Seas Entertainment.
