Karakarakemuri

Description
Karakarakemuri is a Japanese manga artist. The creator is best known for the supernatural action series Donten ni Warau, known in English as Laughing Under the Clouds. This manga was serialized in Mag Garden's Monthly Comic Avarus magazine from March 2011 to July 2014 and compiled into six volumes.

The world of Donten ni Warau expanded with two additional manga series. A sequel titled Laughing Under the Clouds Gaiden was published in Monthly Comic Garden from December 2013 to February 2017, spanning three volumes. A prequel series called Laughing in Limbo (Rengoku ni Warau) began serialization in December 2013 on the Web Comic Beat's platform and is set 300 years before the events of the original story. The prequel has been collected into multiple volumes, with at least fourteen released as of 2024.

Karakarakemuri is also the creator of Mars Red, a manga series that began publication around 2020. The story is set in Japan during the Taisho era in 1923 and follows a military unit called Code Zero, composed of vampires who hunt other vampires. The series is inspired by a stage play of the same name by Bun-O Fujisawa. Mars Red has been described as the creator's eleventh major title. Other works attributed to the artist include the series Replica, Shinigami x Doctor, Countdown 7 Days, and:REverSAL.

Several of Karakarakemuri's original works have been adapted into other media. The original Donten ni Warau manga was adapted into a twelve-episode anime television series produced by studio Doga Kobo, which aired from October to December 2014. A trilogy of anime films titled Laughing Under the Clouds Gaiden was produced by Wit Studio and released between December 2017 and September 2018. A live-action film adaptation of the original series was also released in March 2018. Karakarakemuri provided the original character designs for the Mars Red anime television series, which aired in 2021.

The creator's artistic identity is characterized by a blend of historical Japanese settings with supernatural folklore and action elements. Donten ni Warau is set in the early Meiji era following the restoration, a period of significant social and cultural change in Japan. The story incorporates the legend of Orochi, a giant demon serpent, and follows the Kumō brothers who are tasked with transporting criminals to a giant prison on Lake Biwa. Mars Red similarly uses the historical backdrop of the Taisho era to frame its vampire narrative. Descriptions of Karakarakemuri's work frequently highlight a combination of beautiful or magnificent artwork, dynamic action scenes, and moments of humor within violent or serious narratives.
