Tatsuki Fujimoto

Description
Tatsuki Fujimoto is a Japanese manga artist, born on October 10 in either 1992 or 1993 in Nikaho, Akita Prefecture. He graduated with a degree in Western painting from Tohoku University of Art and Design in 2014. His early interest in drawing was nurtured by attending painting classes, and his background in fine arts would later influence his visual style and narrative approach.

Fujimoto began his career by submitting one-shot manga while still a student. His first published work was the one-shot Love is Blind in 2014, though he had created several contest entries and award-winning one-shots in the preceding years, including A Couple Clucking Chickens Were Still Kickin' in the Schoolyard and Sasaki Stopped a Bullet. These early short stories were later collected in the two-volume anthology Tatsuki Fujimoto Before Chainsaw Man, subtitled 17–21 and 22–26, which trace his artistic development from his teenage years onward.

His first major serialized work was Fire Punch, which ran on Shueisha’s Shōnen Jump+ platform from April 2016 to January 2018 and was collected in eight volumes. The series established his reputation for dark, unpredictable storytelling and cinematic pacing.

Fujimoto achieved widespread recognition with his second serialized work, Chainsaw Man. It was first published in Weekly Shōnen Jump from December 2018 to December 2020, with a second part beginning on Shōnen Jump+ in July 2022. The manga topped the Kono Manga ga Sugoi! list for male readers in 2021 and won the 66th Shogakukan Manga Award for Best Shōnen Manga. It has since become a global phenomenon. The original work was adapted into an anime television series by the studio MAPPA in 2022, and a film continuation, Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc, was released in 2025, with Fujimoto credited for the original story.

Beyond his serialized works, Fujimoto has garnered critical acclaim for his standalone one-shots. Look Back, published on Shōnen Jump+ in July 2021, received the top spot on the Kono Manga ga Sugoi! list in 2022 and was later collected as a single volume. Goodbye, Eri, a 200-page one-shot published in April 2022, further demonstrated his ability to experiment with narrative structure and visual storytelling.

Fujimoto’s artistic identity is characterized by a cinematic sensibility, often citing film as a major influence. He has expressed a desire to create manga with the unpredictable structure of Korean films, citing The Chaser as an example, and has also referenced works such as The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, The Raid, and filmmakers like Takeshi Kitano. His style frequently incorporates references to both live-action cinema and anime, blending genres and subverting narrative expectations. His panel composition and storytelling methods are noted for their filmic quality, and he has cited manga artists including Hiroaki Samura, Hideki Arai, and Tsutomu Nihei as influences.

In the anime industry, Fujimoto’s works have been adapted by prominent studios, with MAPPA producing the Chainsaw Man series and film. The one-shot Look Back was also adapted into an anime film. These adaptations have reinforced his status as a leading creator in contemporary manga and anime, with his work recognized for both commercial success and critical praise. His earlier one-shot stories were later adapted into the anthology anime series Tatsuki Fujimoto 17-26, released in 2025.
