Takashi Okazaki

Description
Takashi Okazaki was born on March 18, 1974 in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, and is a graduate of Tama University of the Arts. He is a Japanese manga artist, visual designer, and graphic designer best known as the creator of the Afro Samurai franchise.

Okazaki began his career in the late 1990s as one of four artists who debuted in the self-published manga magazine Nou Nou Hau in November 1998. His first manga series, Afro Samurai, was initially published as a dōjinshi (self-published work) in the preparatory issue zero of the magazine and featured on its cover. The series was serialized in Nou Nou Hau until the magazine ceased publication in September 2002. The manga attracted attention for its unique style and premise, leading to an unusual path from an obscure independent comic to a major international multimedia franchise. Hollywood actor Samuel L. Jackson discovered the pilot movie and became instrumental in bringing the project to the United States, serving as both the lead voice actor and a producer.

The Afro Samurai manga was adapted into a five-episode anime miniseries that aired in 2007, followed by a sequel television film titled Afro Samurai: Resurrection, for which Okazaki is credited with the story. Following the release of the anime, Okazaki recreated his original dōjinshi into a two-volume manga series released in the United States by Tor Books and Seven Seas Entertainment. The world of Afro Samurai blends futuristic technology with the traditions of Edo-period Japan, a fusion Okazaki has described as bringing the essence of modern technology to a historical setting, inspired by the movies, novels, and news around him.

Beyond Afro Samurai, Okazaki has contributed his distinctive visual style to numerous other projects as a character designer and artistic director. He worked on character design for the 2009 film Summer Wars and served as artistic director for the 2016 video game Furi. His character design credits include the anime series Garo: Vanishing Line in 2017, the film Batman Ninja in 2018, and the 2024 series Ninja Kamui. In 2021, he worked as character designer, concept artist, and artistic director for The Duel, the first episode of Star Wars: Visions. He has also worked as a cover artist for Marvel Comics, beginning with the relaunch of Werewolf By Night in April 2020, and has created covers for titles including Black Widow, Non-Stop Spider-Man, and Deadpool: Black, White & Blood. In June 2023, Okazaki announced a new original manga project titled NUMB. His work has been recognized with a Primetime Emmy Award nomination.
