Takashi Takeuchi
Description
Takashi Takeuchi, born Tomotaka Takeuchi on August 28, 1973, is a Japanese artist, character designer, and the co-founder of the prolific creative enterprise Type-Moon. His career began with aspirations of becoming a manga artist, earning an honorable mention in the 1996 Enix 21st Century Manga Grand Prize for his work F and publishing a short comic in Monthly Shōnen Gangan Wing in 1997. After working as a CG artist and motion designer at game companies including Compile and Eighting, he formed the doujin circle Takebouki with his long-time friend, writer Kinoko Nasu. This circle evolved into Type-Moon, which was later incorporated as the brand under the company Notes, with Takeuchi serving as its representative.
Takeuchi is most widely recognized as the original character designer for a series of foundational visual novels that have since expanded into major media franchises. His work on Tsukihime (2000) and the landmark Fate/stay night (2004) established a signature visual style that has defined Type-Moon’s identity. His creative partnership with Nasu is central to his career, with Takeuchi providing character designs and illustrations for Nasu’s stories across multiple formats, including the light novel series Kara no Kyoukai—known in English as the Garden of sinners—for which he is credited as the original character designer across its several film adaptations.
The consistency of his artistic identity is notable. He is known for a style that blends elegance with a sense of fantasy, and for a recurring motif in his character designs that fans have nicknamed the Saber face, named after the popular heroine from Fate/stay night. His influences include manga artists such as Yoshihiro Togashi and Yasuhiro Nightow, as well as anime creators like Yoshiaki Kawajiri. His direct involvement in anime extends beyond original designs to production roles; he is frequently credited as a producer on anime adaptations of Type-Moon properties, including the various Fate series and the Kara no Kyoukai film projects.
His role is central to the visual identity of the Fate franchise, which has become a global multimedia phenomenon. He has served as art director and character designer for the immensely popular mobile game Fate/Grand Order, personally illustrating key characters such as Mash Kyrielight and supervising the visual design for hundreds of others. Among his credits is the 2013 anime special the Garden of sinners -recalled out summer- extra chorus, where he is credited for the original story alongside Kinoko Nasu, based on a manga they created under the collective name The Bamboo Broom.
