Description
Riki Ohkanda is an American-born director, screenwriter, and original creator working in the Japanese film and anime industries. She has resided in Japan for over two decades and is known for her work on the feature-length anime film Chibiham, Juicy & Me.
Ohkanda was born in the United States and is of Hungarian extraction. Due to her father's work, she spent her childhood in various European countries before graduating from an American high school in Budapest. She returned to the United States for college, where she studied the philosophy of science, before transferring to a Japanese university to complete her degree. After graduation, she was recruited for an assistant director position on a television show and has since built a freelance career in the media industry. She has worked on the directorial teams of numerous Japanese television dramas and films, including projects such as Aibo, Zettai Reido, and Sugar Sugar Honey, training under director Izumi Seiji at Toei.
In 2022, Ohkanda made her debut as an original creator and director with the feature-length anime Chibiham, Juicy & Me. The film was produced by motion capture studio Ains, with Ryō Nakajima serving as producer and CG director. Ohkanda is credited as the original story creator, director, and CG supervisor for the project. The film is a culture shock comedy that centers on Chibiham, an obnoxious and culturally oblivious American tourist visiting Japan, and the chaos she causes for her exchange student cousin Paprika and her friend Juicy. The story is drawn from Ohkanda's perspective as an American who has lived in Japan for many years.
Beyond her work in film and television, Ohkanda is a practitioner and advocate of traditional Japanese arts. She studies Japanese dance and the tea ceremony and is known for wearing kimono in both her professional and personal life. She maintains an online presence under the name PaprikaGirl, where she shares aspects of Japanese culture and seasonal traditions.
