Yama Wayama

Description
Yama Wayama is the pseudonym of a Japanese manga artist born on January 25, 1995 in Okinawa, where she was also raised. She adopted her pen name from a high school nickname, having previously used other variations including Tomoyoshi Wayama. Wayama decided to pursue manga as a career in her final year of high school and subsequently enrolled in the manga program at Tokyo Polytechnic University. Her professional debut came in 2015 while she was still a student, winning the Newcomer's Award in the Chiba Tetsuya Award for her submission Yūtōsei no Mondai, which led to her first paid publication, the one-shot Nagisa e Ikou, in the seinen magazine Weekly D Morning in 2016. After facing difficulties launching a serialized series through traditional editorial channels, Wayama shifted her approach to create work on her own terms without external input, publishing one-shots on the online community Pixiv and eventually producing doujinshi, or self-published manga.

Her breakthrough came with the doujinshi Captivated, by You, which she released at the Comita convention in February 2019. The work was soon acquired for commercial publication by Enterbrain and became a major critical and commercial success, selling out three printings within a single month. It won the Short Work category prize at the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize and the New Face Award in the manga division at the Japan Media Arts Festival. Her next work, Let's Go Karaoke!, followed a similar path, originating as a doujinshi before being picked up by Kadokawa for wider publication. Wayama's first serialized manga, Onna no Sono no Hoshi, began running in the josei magazine Feel Young in January 2020 and remains ongoing.

The adaptation history of Wayama's work spans multiple media formats and several of her titles. Captivated, by You received a live-action television drama adaptation that aired from January to February 2021, starring Ryūsei Ōnishi. Let's Go Karaoke! was adapted into a live-action film that premiered in Japan in January 2024, directed by Nobuhiro Yamashita with a screenplay by Akiko Nogi. Both Captivated, by You and Let's Go Karaoke! were announced for simultaneous television anime adaptations in October 2024, produced by studio Doga Kobo with Asami Nakatani directing, Yoshimi Narita handling series composition, and Mai Matsuura designing the characters. The anime for Let's Go Karaoke! premiered in July 2025, while Captivated, by You began airing in August 2025. Wayama's serialized work Onna no Sono no Hoshi was adapted into an original video animation produced by studio Lapin Track, with Mamoru Hatakeyama directing, and was bundled with a special edition of the manga's third volume released in December 2022.

Recurring themes and a distinctive artistic identity define Wayama's body of work. She primarily creates slice of life stories and has stated that she tries to maintain a generally mellow energy in her manga. Her works often depict intimate relationships between male characters that go beyond friendship but stop short of explicit romance, a quality journalist Atsushi Takayama has described as brilliant relationships between men that are not quite romantic. Wayama has acknowledged that she draws some material with boys' love conventions in mind and some without, preferring that each reader interpret her work according to their own perspective. Her stated influences include manga artists Usamaru Furuya, whom she cites as her most significant influence, as well as Eiji Nonaka, Junji Ito, and Makoto Kobayashi. She has also cited the films of Shinobu Yaguchi for their character development and warm humor, and has noted that growing up in Okinawa, with its laid-back atmosphere and diversity of personalities, naturally informs the relaxed tempo and accepting worldview of her stories. Wayama works in both analog and digital methods, having drawn Let's Go Karaoke! entirely digitally for efficiency while drawing Onna no Sono no Hoshi with analog lines that she then scans and polishes.

Wayama holds significant industry standing as evidenced by both commercial performance and critical recognition. Onna no Sono no Hoshi topped Takarajimasha's Kono Manga ga Sugoi! 2021 list of best manga for female readers and had over 2.45 million copies in circulation by September 2024. The series also won the Social Impact Award in the manga division at the 25th Japan Media Arts Festival in 2022. Let's Go Karaoke! had over 500,000 copies in circulation by October 2022 and was nominated for the Manga Taishō award in both 2021 and 2024, placing third in the former. Beyond the major awards for Captivated, by You, Wayama's work has consistently appeared in Manga Taishō nominations and annual best-of lists throughout the early 2020s. Her ability to successfully transition from self-published doujinshi to commercially published volumes, followed by live-action and anime adaptations across multiple projects, demonstrates a rare trajectory in the manga industry and positions her as a distinctive voice in contemporary Japanese comics.
