Tatsuya Endō
Description
Tatsuya Endo is a Japanese manga artist born on July 23, 1980, in Ibaraki Prefecture. He first aspired to become a manga artist in elementary school, influenced by his older brother and works such as Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball. After graduating from high school, he began his professional career by submitting works to contests. He made his debut in 2000 with the one-shot Seibu Yūgi, published in Akamaru Jump. Over the following years, he gained experience as an assistant for several established manga series, including Blue Exorcist, Fire Punch, and Attack on Titan. He also worked under the mentorship of artists Yasuhiro Kanō and Yoshiyuki Nishi.
Endo’s early published works were often characterized by darker, mature themes. His first serialized manga was Tista, which ran in Jump Square from 2007 to 2008 and focused on a young assassin. This was followed by Blade of the Moon Princess, a historical action series serialized in the same magazine from 2010 to 2012. During this period and in the years that followed, he also created several one-shots, including Rengoku no Ashe about witch hunting, Ishi ni Usubeni, Tetsu ni Hoshi, and I Spy. These one-shots contained elements, such as spy protagonists and makeshift family dynamics, that would later serve as foundational ideas for his most successful work.
After completing these projects, Endo collaborated with his long-time editor, Shihei Lin, to develop a new series for the Shōnen Jump+ platform. They combined concepts from his previous one-shots to create Spy×Family, a serialized manga that launched in March 2019. The series marked a shift toward a brighter and more comedic tone, a direction encouraged by his editor after years of darker stories. Spy×Family achieved rapid commercial and critical success, becoming one of the best-selling manga series. Its popularity led to an anime adaptation; the first season aired in April 2022, followed by a second season in October 2022 and a feature film, Spy×Family Code: White, released in April 2023. The manga has received multiple awards, including the 2019 Next Manga Award in the web manga category and the 2020 TSUTAYA Comic Award.
Throughout his career, Endo has demonstrated a detailed approach to plotting and character development, with his editor noting his tendency to thoroughly think through every aspect of a story and identify contradictions. His artistic identity reflects a foundation in clean, restrained linework, and his style has evolved from the somber narratives of his early serializations to the balance of action, comedy, and family-centric storytelling in Spy×Family. With over two decades of experience in the industry, he is recognized for his versatility, having worked on a range of genres from supernatural action to spy comedy, and his career is notable for a progression from long-term assistant to the creator of a globally successful manga and anime franchise.
