Kenichi Sonoda

Description
Kenichi Sonoda, born December 13, 1962, is a Japanese manga artist, animator, and character designer recognized for his significant contributions to action-oriented anime and manga since the mid-1980s. His birthplace is variously cited as Kumamoto Prefecture and Takaishi in Osaka Prefecture.

Sonoda began his professional career in Tokyo in 1984 at the anime studio Artmic. During his tenure there, he created the original character designs for the studio's notable science fiction OVA series, including Bubblegum Crisis, for which he designed the Knight Saber hardsuits, and the Gall Force series. He also contributed as a production designer to the acclaimed theatrical film Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise in 1987.

As an original creator, Sonoda is best known for developing his own properties that blend detailed vehicular action with his distinctive character aesthetics. His manga series Gunsmith Cats, which ran from 1991 to 1997, follows the exploits of Rally Vincent, a young gunsmith and bounty hunter in Chicago. The series was nominated for both the Harvey Award and the Tezuka Award, solidifying his reputation as a major talent in the industry. He later continued the story with a sequel, Gunsmith Cats Burst, from 2004 to 2008. His other major manga works include Cannon God Exaxxion, serialized from 1997 to 2004, and Bullet the Wizard, published from 2010 to 2013.

The character Bean Bandit, a muscle-bound courier known as the Roadbuster, is central to Sonoda's original storytelling. The character first appeared in the 1988-1989 manga Riding Bean, which was also adapted into a 1989 OVA for which Sonoda wrote the original story and served as character designer. Decades later, Sonoda launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund a new anime project centered on this character, titled Bean Bandit. The successful crowdfunding effort reflected his belief that the Japanese animation industry had not fully recognized the series' potential, leading him to pursue a non-commercial, passion-driven production. The resulting OVA was released in 2021, with Sonoda taking on multiple roles including director, scriptwriter, and chief animation director.

A recurring theme throughout Sonoda's work is a meticulous fusion of Japanese illustrative style with American hard-boiled action cinema. His narratives frequently feature fast cars, detailed firearms, and tough female protagonists. He is a self-described gun enthusiast who owns replica firearms and is known for his precise depictions of weapon mechanics and car chases, often using models and实地考察 to ensure accuracy. Beyond his creative work, Sonoda is also the 19th head of his family's traditional wagashi confectionery shop, Sonoda-ya, which was established in 1582, and he has designed packaging for its products.
