Yui
Description
Yui is the original creator of the light novel series Bibliophile Princess, which has since been adapted into a manga and an anime television series. The series began as a web novel serialized on the user-generated publishing site Shōsetsuka ni Narō, running from September 2015 to January 2022. The success of this online serialization led to its acquisition by the publishing company Ichijinsha, which began releasing the story as a light novel in print. The first light novel volume was published on July 1, 2016, under Ichijinsha’s Iris NEO imprint, with illustrations by Satsuki Shiina. As of late 2022, seven volumes of the light novel had been released in Japan.
The story’s popularity prompted further expansion into other media. A manga adaptation, illustrated by Yui Kikuta, began serialization in Ichijinsha’s Monthly Comic Zero Sum magazine on August 28, 2018. This manga version has been compiled into multiple tankōbon volumes. An anime television adaptation produced by the studio Madhouse aired from October to December 2022, bringing the original story by Yui to a wider audience.
Thematically, Bibliophile Princess centers on a protagonist, Elianna Bernstein, whose deep love for books defines her character and serves as the core of the narrative. The story is a romance set in a fantasy kingdom, focusing on the political and social intrigues of the royal court. A recurring element is the contrast between Elianna’s perceived role as a mere “bookworm” and her significant intellectual contributions, which stem from the knowledge she gains through her passion for reading.
Yui’s significance in the industry is demonstrated through the successful multimedia expansion of a single work, originating from a web novel to become a published light novel series with manga and anime adaptations. This trajectory reflects a common path for success in the contemporary Japanese publishing landscape, where popular online stories are developed into major franchises. The work has been commercially successful, with the series seeing publication in multiple languages and the light novels and manga being licensed for North American release by J-Novel Club.
