Bkub Okawa

Description
Bkub Okawa is a Japanese illustrator and manga artist born on October 3, 1986. Before his professional debut, he created doujinshi under the circle name Fuminbain. His career began in 2008 when he won an Excellence Prize in the 8th Dengeki Comic Grand Prix for his comic 3LDKM, which led to his first serialized work, Super Elegant, published in Dengeki G's Festival! Comic that same year.

Okawa rose to widespread popularity with his series Pop Team Epic, a four-panel surreal comedy manga that began serialization on Takeshobo’s Manga Life Win website in August 2014. The series follows the absurd misadventures of two 14-year-old girls, Popuko and Pipimi, and is noted for its frequent pop culture parodies, surreal humor, and non-sequitur style. The manga’s success led to an anime television adaptation produced by Kamikaze Douga and King Records, which first aired from January to March 2018, with a second season following from October to December 2022. The anime became well-known for its unconventional format, featuring different voice actors for each episode and a variety of parodic segments.

Beyond Pop Team Epic, Okawa has created numerous other manga series, many in the four-panel format. His other original works include Super Elegant, Hyper Ultra Girlish, Honey Come Chatka, and Risu Bokkuri. He is also a regular contributing artist for the Ensemble Stars! media franchise, for which he created the gag parody manga Ensembukubu Stars! (and its sequel Ensembukubu Stars!!), which reimagines the franchise’s characters in his comedic style. This parody series was itself adapted into a series of short anime films titled Bukusuta The WORLD, which were screened alongside the Ensemble Stars!! Road to Show!! theatrical anime in March 2022. His extensive body of work also includes contributions to anthologies for franchises such as Fate/Grand Order and King of Prism.

Okawa’s artistic identity is defined by his work in absurdist comedy, often presented through the four-panel manga structure. His style is characterized by surreal gags, pop culture parodies, and a distinctive, simplistic art style. His professional activities extend beyond manga; he has contributed illustrations for various collaborations, and in 2021 he launched a YouTube channel, later debuting as a virtual YouTuber in June 2022.
