Hokuto Matsumura
Description
Hokuto Matsumura is a Japanese actor and singer who began his voice acting career in 2022 with a leading role in the animated feature film Suzume. He was born on June 18, 1995, in Shimada, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. Before his work as a voice actor, Matsumura built his career in the entertainment industry as a member of the boy group SixTONES, under Starto Entertainment (formerly Johnny & Associates), with whom he made his CD debut in 2020. His path as a performer began much earlier when he joined the agency as a trainee in 2009, inspired by watching the actor Tomohisa Yamashita on television.
Matsumura's acting career encompasses numerous roles in both live-action television dramas and films. He made his acting debut in the 2012 television series Shiritsu Bakaleya Koukou. This was followed by a steady stream of roles, including a leading part in the TBS drama Miss Double Faced Teacher later that same year. He has since appeared in a wide variety of projects, such as the popular drama Perfect World in 2019 and the NHK morning drama Come Come Everybody in 2021, a role for which he won the Best Supporting Actor award at the 111th Television Drama Academy Awards.
His film work is equally extensive, with leading roles in movies like Liar × Liar (2021) and xxxHolic (2022). For his performance in the film All the Long Nights (2024), Matsumura received significant critical acclaim, including the Best Actor award at the 98th Kinema Junpo Best Ten Awards in 2025. He has also been recognized with the Newcomer of the Year award at the 46th Japan Academy Film Prize for his role in xxxHolic.
Matsumura's sole voice acting credit to date is his role as Sōta Munakata in director Makoto Shinkai's 2022 animated blockbuster, Suzume. This performance marked his debut in the field of voice acting. His work in the film was recognized internationally with a nomination for Best Voice Acting – Feature at the 51st Annie Awards in 2023. While his voice acting work is currently limited to this one high-profile project, it stands as a notable achievement in his broader, award-winning career as a Japanese actor.
