He serves as the writer and original creator for the manga series I'm Standing on a Million Lives, also known as I'm Standing on 1,000,000 Lives, with artist Nao Akinari handling the illustration duties. The series began serialization in Kodansha’s Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine in June 2016 and was still ongoing as of late 2024, with over twenty compiled volumes released.
The story follows a group of students repeatedly transported to a fantasy world to complete challenging quests. The series was adapted into a television anime, with the first season airing from October to December 2020 and a second season following from July to September 2021. The production credits for the anime list both Naoki Yamakawa as the original creator and Nao Akinari as the manga artist.
Beyond this fantasy series, Yamakawa is also the original writer for another manga, My Home Hero, with artist Masashi Asaki. That crime thriller series began serialization in Kodansha’s Weekly Young Magazine in 2017 and was also adapted into a television anime that premiered in April 2023.
Yamakawa’s work is defined by a collaborative creative process as a writer, partnering with different artists to realize his stories. In I'm Standing on a Million Lives, his writing is noted for incorporating contemporary social issues into the fantasy quest format, with story arcs addressing topics such as religious conflict, natural disasters, and drug-related problems. The series gained significant recognition, leading to two anime adaptations, establishing Yamakawa as a creator whose original works have achieved mainstream visibility within the industry.
