Shigemitsu Harada
Description
Shigemitsu Harada is a Japanese manga writer and original creator, born on March 11, 1972, in Takikawa. He is widely recognized for his work as a story writer, frequently collaborating with various artists rather than illustrating the manga himself. Harada is known for his fondness for risqué comedies and absurd erotic humor, a specialty that is evident in many of his works.
Harada began his career with the manga Ippatsu Kiki Musume in the late 1990s. Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, he established a reputation for creating numerous series that blend comedy, science fiction, and adult-oriented situations. Some of his most notable original works from this period include Yuria 100 Type, also known as The Pan-human Type Girl Hyakushiki, which is often cited as his representative work. He is also known for other titles such as Ore-tama: Ore ga Chikyuu o Sukuu tte!?, Re: Marina, and the Motoyome series.
In his creative process, Harada typically provides the story and original concept while other artists handle the illustrations. This model has proven highly successful, allowing him to produce a wide range of titles across different genres and publishers. His notable artistic collaborators include Takahiro Seguchi (also known as Seguchi Takahiro) on works like Re: Marina and Yuricam, Kyujo Matsumoto on the Motoyome series and Majo wa Mioji kara, and Karoti on the sports manga Sprinter.
Harada achieved significant mainstream recognition for his work on the Cells at Work! franchise. He wrote the story for Cells at Work! Code Black, a spin-off of Akane Shimizu's original concept. This manga, illustrated by Issei Hatsuyoshiya, was serialized in Kodansha's Morning magazine from June 2018 to January 2021. Unlike the comparatively healthy body depicted in the main series, Code Black is set in the dark and unhealthy environment of a human body suffering from the effects of stress, poor diet, smoking, and other ailments. The series was a commercial success and was adapted into a thirteen-episode anime television series produced by Liden Films, which aired from January to March 2021. Harada also wrote another spin-off, Cells at Work! Lady, illustrated by Akari Otokawa.
Beyond the Cells at Work! franchise, Harada continues to be active in the industry. In March 2023, he launched a new erotic comedy manga titled Hikaru to Hikaru, illustrated by Hachi Sendo, about a boy who infiltrates a girls' school. His ability to consistently create compelling original concepts that adapt to different artists and genres underscores his significance as a storyteller in the manga industry.
