Johanne
Description
Johanne is a manga artist known primarily for illustrating the remake version of the fantasy manga series Peach Boy Riverside. Prior to working on a major commercial release, Johanne was an experienced creator of doujinshi, or self-published independent comics. This background in indie circles preceded the artist’s first serialized work with a mainstream publisher.
The original concept for Peach Boy Riverside was created by Coolkyousinnjya, who began publishing the story as a web manga in 2008. Johanne became involved with the project as the illustrator for a remake version, which began serialization in Kodansha’s Shonen Magazine R in August 2015 and later moved to the Magazine Pocket app. This remake, featuring Johanne’s artwork, was compiled into a complete run of sixteen tankobon volumes. The series presents a dark fantasy reimagining of the classic Japanese folktale of Momotaro, following Princess Saltherine and a boy named Mikoto as they encounter various monsters known as ogres.
In this collaborative arrangement, Coolkyousinnjya is credited with the original story while Johanne is credited as the artist for the remake manga. Johanne’s work on this series formed the basis for the broader media franchise. A television anime adaptation, produced by Asahi Production, aired from July to September 2021, with the original work attributed to both Coolkyousinnjya and Johanne. The artist’s significant contribution lies in providing the definitive visual interpretation for the commercially successful remake version of the series, which was released in multiple languages, including an English-language edition by Kodansha USA.
