Moyoco Anno is a Japanese manga artist, essayist, and fashion writer born on March 26, 1971, in Suginami, Tokyo. She has aspired to be a manga artist since elementary school and made her professional debut in 1989 with the short story Mattaku Ikashita Yatsuradaze. Her career spans over thirty years, and she is known for creating works that appeal across demographics while often focusing on the psychology of her characters and drawing inspiration from the fashion world.

Anno is the original creator of several notable manga series that have been adapted into anime and other media. One of her most popular series is Sugar Sugar Rune, which was serialized in the magazine Nakayoshi from 2003 to 2007. The story follows two young witches competing to become queen by capturing hearts in the human world. This manga won the Kodansha Manga Award for children's manga in 2005 and was adapted into a 51-episode anime television series that aired from 2005 to 2006. The series has been published in English by Del Rey. Another significant original work is The Diary of Ochibi-san, a slice-of-life manga that was serialized in The Asahi Shimbun newspaper from 2007 to 2014 and later in Aera magazine until 2019. This series was compiled into ten volumes. It inspired a stop-motion short animation for the Japan Animator Expo project in 2015, followed by a television anime adaptation produced by Studio Khara which aired for 24 episodes on NHK from October 2023 to March 2024. Anno is also credited for Yoiko no Rekishi Anime: Ōkina Kabu, a historical educational anime, demonstrating the range of her involvement in the medium.

Beyond these examples, many of her other manga have been adapted into various formats. Her early work Happy Mania was made into a television drama series in 1998 and sold more than three million copies. Sakuran, a manga about a courtesan in the Edo period, was adapted into a live-action film in 2006. Hataraki Man, which explores the life of a female magazine editor balancing work and personal relationships, was adapted into both an anime television series and a live-action drama. Her manga Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen was announced in 2020 to be adapted into a Broadway musical, marking the first time a Japanese manga received such an adaptation. Her body of work also includes titles such as Flowers & Bees, In Clothes Called Fat, and the autobiographical Insufficient Direction, which chronicles her married life with director Hideaki Anno.

Anno's artistic identity is characterized by her sophisticated and detailed drawing style, often compared to fashion illustration. She primarily writes for the josei demographic, which targets adult women, though she has also found great success with children's manga like Sugar Sugar Rune. Her stories frequently delve into the complexities of female psychology, relationships, identity, and the challenges of modern life, including the struggle for work-life balance. In 2008, she took a career hiatus due to health reasons, during which she published essay manga about her life with her husband. In recognition of her influence and contributions, an asteroid, 300082 Moyocoanno, was named in her honor.
