Hiroyuki Sugahara

Description
Hiroyuki Sugahara is a Japanese manga artist born in 1959 in Fukui Prefecture. He graduated with a degree in philosophy in 1982 and initially worked as a civil servant before making his manga debut in 1984 with the work Ku, Kuraitsu... around the same time he was a finalist in a competition held by Comic Morning magazine.

Sugahara is best known for creating the comic series Feeling Metaphysical (Kibun wa Uaa), which began serialization in Kodansha’s Weekly Comic Morning in 1987. The series, a yonkoma (four-panel) comedy about office workers, became an instant success. Its popularity led to an anime adaptation in 1994 titled Real Life Office Lady Lecture (Kibun wa Uaa Jitsuzai OL Kōza). The original manga is noted for its absurdist humor and clean yet exaggerated art style. The cast frequently included an author surrogate character, depicted with a pencil on his head, and his wife Yoshie, an office lady whose comical attempts to sleep at work made her a fan favorite.

Following the success of Feeling Metaphysical, Sugahara created a spin-off series titled Mrs. Yoshie (Yoshie-san), which began serialization in Kodansha’s Afternoon magazine in 1992. This situational comedy focused on the domestic life of a manga artist, S, and his wife and assistant, Yoshie. Other works by Sugahara include a sequel to Mrs. Yoshie, That Is Enokida!, and Introduction to the Non-existent Pathology. His work is characterized by slice-of-life office comedy, absurdist humor, and the use of semi-autobiographical characters.
