Yūji Nagai, also known by the name Yuuji Nagai, is a Japanese manga artist and original creator best known for his long-running comedy series Penguin no Mondai. He made his professional debut after receiving an honorable mention in the 54th Shogakukan New Comic Award for children's manga, also known as the Fujiko F. Fujio Award, for his work Boa-jima no Boa.
Nagai's most prominent work is the manga Penguin no Mondai, which follows the comedic daily life of a penguin named Beckham Kinoshita who attends an elementary school in Japan. The series was serialized in the monthly magazine CoroCoro Comic from July 2006 to December 2012, later collected into fifteen tankōbon volumes. Its success led to a direct sequel, Penguin no Mondai+, which ran in the same magazine from 2013 to 2014.
The Penguin no Mondai franchise became a significant multimedia property. The manga was adapted into a television anime series that aired on TV Tokyo from April 2008 to March 2010, totaling one hundred episodes. It was followed by three additional anime series: Penguin no Mondai MAX (2010-2011), Penguin no Mondai DX? (2011-2012), and Penguin no Mondai POW (2012-2013). The property also expanded into a theatrical film, Gekijōban Penguin no Mondai: Shiawase no Aoi Tori de Go-Pen-nasai, released in September 2009, for which Nagai is credited as the original story creator. Multiple video games based on the series were also released between 2008 and 2014. In 2009, Penguin no Mondai received the Shogakukan Manga Award in the children's category.
Following the conclusion of the Penguin no Mondai series, Nagai created 100% Pascal-sensei, a manga serialized in CoroCoro Comic from 2015 to 2018 and collected into eight volumes. This work was also adapted into a television anime in 2017. His subsequent work, Armageddon ni Damasareru!!, was serialized in CoroCoro Comic from 2019 to 2021. More recently, he began serializing Maizen Sisters in the same magazine in 2022.
