Akira Amano is a Japanese manga artist and character designer born on June 22, 1973, in Aichi Prefecture. Amano began their professional career in 1998, debuting with the work Shonen Spin, which won the 38th Chiba Tetsuya Award for an outstanding newcomer from Kodansha. Following this, Amano created several short works and series for Kodansha’s publications, including Petit Petit Rabbit and Monkey Business. In 2002, they began submitting work to Shueisha, and a one-shot titled Bakuhatsu HAWK!! was published in 2003.
Amano achieved mainstream success with the series Katekyo Hitman Reborn!. A one-shot version was published in Weekly Shonen Jump in late 2003, and due to its popularity, the series began regular serialization in May 2004. The manga ran until 2012 and was adapted into an anime series that began in 2006. Reborn! became a significant commercial success, with over 15 million copies in circulation.
Following the conclusion of Reborn!, Amano began the series ēlDLIVE in 2013, initially serialized in Jump Live before moving to the digital magazine Shonen Jump+. This science fiction manga concluded in 2018 and received an anime adaptation in 2017. In October 2020, Amano launched the mystery manga Ron Kamonohashi: Deranged Detective on the Shonen Jump+ platform. The series, which follows an eccentric detective and his partner, was adapted into an anime titled Ron Kamonohashi’s Forbidden Deductions, which premiered in October 2023.
Beyond their own manga series, Amano has been recognized for their character design work. They provided the original character designs for the acclaimed anime series Psycho-Pass, which premiered in 2012, as well as its subsequent sequels and films. In 2024, Amano served as the original character designer for the anime series Suicide Squad ISEKAI.
