Broccoli Lion

Description
Broccoli Lion is the pen name of a Japanese creator known for originating the light novel and manga series The Great Cleric. This body of work represents the primary focus of Broccoli Lion's public career as a writer in the fantasy and isekai genres. The creator began by publishing a web novel titled Seija Musō — Salaryman, Walking the Path to Surpass God, which won the gold prize at the 4th Net Novel Grand Prize and was serialized on the novel submission site Shōsetsuka ni Narō in 2015.

The Great Cleric, known in Japanese as Seija Musō, began as a web novel series on the Shōsetsuka ni Narō website in October 2015. The story follows a Japanese salaryman who is reincarnated into a fantasy world as a healer named Luciel, using his past life experiences to navigate his new existence. Following its online success, the series was acquired by Micro Magazine, which began publishing it as a light novel in print format with illustrations by Sime in August 2016. The light novel is published in English by J-Novel Club.

A manga adaptation of The Great Cleric, illustrated by Hiiro Akikaze, began serialization in Kodansha's Suiyōbi no Sirius web manga magazine in 2017. Kodansha USA Publishing distributes the manga in English. The English edition is published under Kodansha Comics, with the first print volume released in 2023. An anime television series adaptation of The Great Cleric, produced by Yokohama Animation Laboratory and Cloud Hearts, aired from July to September 2023. The anime was directed by Masato Tamagawa and streamed by Crunchyroll.

Recurring themes in Broccoli Lion's work include the isekai premise of reincarnation into a fantasy world, the application of a salaryman's work ethic and business acumen to new challenges, and the journey of a healer protagonist navigating politics, corruption, and personal growth. The story emphasizes perseverance through rigorous training and the protagonist's goal of securing a long, peaceful life after an untimely death.

Broccoli Lion's significance in the industry stems from the successful multi-format expansion of The Great Cleric from an online web novel to a light novel series, a manga adaptation, and an anime television series. The work has been published in English by major distributors, indicating its reach beyond the Japanese market.
