Mateo Ervin

Description
Mateo Ervin was an American voice actor known for his work in anime and video game dubbing, particularly for his role as the enigmatic Otes in the Yu-Gi-Oh! Sevens television series. Born in Texas and based in Brooklyn, New York, Ervin developed an early interest in acting and theater during his school years. He studied communications, psychology, and elementary education at Austin College in Sherman, Texas, where he was also president of the Alpha Psi Omega National Theatre Honor Society. After graduating in 2013, he moved to New York City to pursue a career in theater, further honing his skills at Vassar College's Powerhouse Theater training program.

Ervin's transition into voice-over began in the summer of 2018, encouraged by a friend who recognized his potential in the industry. He enrolled in classes with voice director Darren Dunstan and began a long period of dedicated study with vocal coach Erica Schroeder, meeting with her weekly for several years to refine his craft. His persistence in auditioning eventually led to his most prominent role, voicing the antagonist Otes, also known as the Hologram Man, in the English adaptation of Yu-Gi-Oh! Sevens. He reprised this character for the related video game, Yu-Gi-Oh! Rush Duel: Dawn of the Battle Royale!!, and also voiced the Excited Duelist in another franchise entry, Yu-Gi-Oh! Cross Duel. Beyond the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise, his other voice credits included roles in the video game Idle Defence Arena, the live-action voice-over for Too Hot to Handle: Brazil, and various characters in the animated series Bread Barbershop. He also provided the voice for a character named Cornelius in the video game Of Sense and Soul.

Throughout his career, Ervin worked alongside a consistent community of voice actors and professionals in the New York dubbing scene. His vocal coaches, Erica Schroeder and Darren Dunstan, were significant influences, and he frequently collaborated with fellow actors such as Grace Choi, with whom he maintained a close friendship and professional accountability partnership. His colleagues and mentors consistently described him as an exceptionally kind, humble, and talented individual who was deeply passionate about every role he undertook. In addition to his voice acting, Ervin was an avid enthusiast of games like chess, Dungeons & Dragons, and Magic: The Gathering. He combined his background in education with his love for games by working as a chess tutor for Chess at Three, a program that used storytelling to teach young children, a job that took him to Singapore for an extended period. Mateo Ervin passed away on August 4, 2023, at the age of 32. His passing was met with an outpouring of grief and fond remembrance from the Yu-Gi-Oh! community and his many friends and collaborators, who celebrated his dedication, warmth, and the positive impact he had on those around him.
