Imomushi Narita
Description
Imomushi Narita is a Japanese manga artist and illustrator known for creating fantasy stories that blend slice-of-life comedy with adventure elements. Born on April 27, 1989, in Fukuoka Prefecture, Narita began drawing at a young age, initially aspiring to become an illustrator before transitioning to manga as a primary career path.
Narita first gained recognition in the industry by receiving an honorable mention in the gag category of the Square Enix Manga Award in 2010, followed by the publication of a one-shot in Big Gangan magazine in 2011. Before achieving success as a manga creator, Narita worked as an illustrator for several social games, contributing character designs, monster designs, and card illustrations for titles including Magical Planet, Summon Master, and the mobile game Sheep Paradise between 2012 and 2014.
The artist's most prominent work is the fantasy manga series IT'S MY LIFE, which began serialization in Shogakukan's Ura Sunday web magazine and Manga ONE app in December 2014. The series follows Astra Ludger Doomsday, a retired former knight captain who hopes for a peaceful life in his new home, only to have his plans disrupted when a young apprentice witch named Noah crashes into his house and mistakes him for an evil god. The manga ran for approximately four years, spanning eleven collected volumes and seventy-five chapters. By early 2018, the series had sold over 450,000 copies in Japan.
In 2018, an unusual crowdfunding campaign was launched on the Japanese platform Makuake to produce an anime adaptation of IT'S MY LIFE. The campaign successfully exceeded its initial goal of five million yen, ultimately funding a fourteen-minute original video animation released in 2019. The OVA was produced at studio Creators in Pack, with Hisayoshi Hirasawa serving as chief director and sound director. The cast featured Tetsu Inada as Astra and Hiromi Igarashi as Noah.
Following IT'S MY LIFE, Narita created Killing Me / Killing You, a manga series published from 2017 to 2023 spanning five volumes. In 2025, Narita began serializing Virgin Killer Ninpouchou. Additionally, promotional videos for Killing Me / Killing You were produced in 2020, with Narita credited in multiple creative roles including original creator, director, animation director, and CG director for those short productions.
In interviews, Narita has described a creative process that begins with character design, developing characters according to personal preference before constructing stories around them. The artist places strong emphasis on character consistency, noting that story ideas may be discarded if they would require characters to act in ways inconsistent with their established personalities. Narita primarily works digitally, using photo brushes for backgrounds and adapting traditional watercolor techniques to digital tools.
The artist is a known enthusiast of heavy metal music, an influence that appears prominently in IT'S MY LIFE, where chapter titles are named after rock and metal songs, characters reference metal musicians, and magic incantations draw from metal lyrics, particularly from Finnish bands. Narita has stated that the series was created by including only elements personally enjoyed, such as masks, non-human characters, and various character archetypes. Regarding future work, Narita has expressed interest in creating a manga set in the real world about a band while continuing to work primarily in fantasy genres.
In February 2019, Narita was invited as a guest of honor at the CoAket manga convention in Hamburg, Germany, marking an international appearance ahead of the German release of IT'S MY LIFE later that year.
