Hajime Asano
Description
Hajime Asano is a Japanese author best known as the creator of the light novel series Mayo Chiki! Asano began his professional career in 2009 when his submission for the 5th MF Bunko J Light Novel Newcomer Award received the grand prize. This winning manuscript was retitled and published as Mayo Chiki! marking Asano's official debut as a novelist.
Asano's most prominent work, Mayo Chiki! (full title Mayoeru Shitsuji to Chikin na Ore to), is a romantic comedy series that follows a high school boy named Kinjiro Sakamachi who suffers from gynophobia, an abnormal fear of women. The story is set in motion when he discovers that the popular and handsome butler of a wealthy heiress, Subaru Konoe, is actually a girl. The light novel series was published by Media Factory under their MF Bunko J imprint, with illustrations by Seiji Kikuchi. The first volume was released on November 21, 2009, and the series concluded with its twelfth volume on July 23, 2012.
The success of the light novels led to a franchise expansion across different media. A manga adaptation of Mayo Chiki! was illustrated by the artist known as Neet and serialized in Media Factory's seinen manga magazine Comic Alive from July 2010 to November 2013. A spin-off manga titled Mayo Mayo! was also serialized in Kadokawa Shoten's magazine Nyantype. In 2011, the series was adapted into an anime television production by the studio Feel, which aired in Japan from July to September of that year. In North America, the anime was licensed by Sentai Filmworks.
Beyond the Mayo Chiki! franchise, Asano continues to work as a light novelist. His later works include the series Lapis Re:Lights and titles such as Dare ni mo Natsukanai Solo Gal ga Mainichi Otomari Shitagatte Kuru, which follows the adventures of a solitary and aloof gyaru who wants to stay over every day. Through his debut and subsequent projects, Asano has established himself as a writer within the light novel industry, contributing works that blend comedy, romance, and character-driven scenarios.
