Shūichi Asō
Description
Shūichi Asō is a Japanese manga artist born on December 26, 1985, in Saitama Prefecture. He initially aspired to create emotional story manga but transitioned to comedy after receiving an honorable mention in the 64th Akatsuka Award for his work Yūsha Party Arawaru. This piece became his debut when it was published in Weekly Shōnen Jump in 2006. His first serialized work, Boku no Watashi no Yūsha Gaku, ran in the same magazine from 2007 to 2008, followed by a short-lived series titled Shinseiki Idol Densetsu Kanata Seven Change in 2009 and 2010.
Asō is best known as the creator of The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. The series originated as a one-shot chapter titled Chōnōryokusha Saiki Kusuo no Psi Nan, published in Jump NEXT! in the summer of 2010. After several irregularly published chapters in Weekly Shōnen Jump in 2011, the series began full serialization in the magazine on May 14, 2012. The manga concluded on February 26, 2018, and its chapters were compiled into 26 tankōbon volumes.
The success of the manga led to multiple adaptations. A flash anime was released in 2013, followed by a full television anime series produced by J.C.Staff and EGG FIRM. The first season aired in 2016, with a second season following in 2018. A conclusion special premiered in December 2018. A six-episode sequel anime series, titled The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.: Reawakened, was released worldwide on Netflix on December 30, 2019, with the original cast and staff returning. A live-action film adaptation directed by Yuichi Fukuda was released in October 2017. Asō has also contributed to the franchise in other ways, providing the voice for the character known as the Voice of Heaven in the anime and making a cameo appearance in the live-action film.
A recurring aspect of Asō’s professional identity is his speed and efficiency as a creator, which he occasionally referenced in his work. His artistic style and approach to comedy are informed by his stated admiration for fellow manga artist Kyōsuke Usuta. In addition to his manga work, he has contributed illustration art for music releases. In September 2019, he announced his marriage to Mirin Furukawa, a member of the idol group Dempagumi.inc.
