Noboru Takahashi
Description
Noboru Takahashi, born on November 8, 1964, in Noda City, Chiba Prefecture, is a Japanese manga artist known for creating the long-running series Mogura no Uta. He began his career as an assistant to the influential horror manga creator Kazuo Umezu. Takahashi made his professional debut in 1988 with the one-shot Goin My Way, published in a special issue of Shogakukans Big Comic Original magazine.
Throughout his career, Takahashi has worked primarily in the realm of seinen manga, which targets a young adult male audience. His body of work includes titles such as Koisuru Momo, his first collected volume; Health Coach Dan, a story about a gifted osteopath that was adapted into a live-action video film (V-cinema); and Lehman Gambler Mouse, a story set in an illegal casino. He has also created historical works, including a manga about Emperor Gaozu of Han titled Liu Bang.
Takahashi is best known as the creator of Mogura no Uta (The Mole Song), which began serialization in Shogakukans Weekly Young Sunday magazine in 2005. Following the cessation of that magazine in 2008, the series moved to Weekly Big Comic Spirits. The series has been commercially successful, with over ten million copies in print. It received the 59th Shogakukan Manga Award in the general category. The series also spawned a side story, Mogura no Uta Gaiden: Papillon Dance.
The popularity of Mogura no Uta led to a series of live-action film adaptations directed by the prolific filmmaker Takashi Miike. The first film, Mogura no Uta: Senyu Sosakan Reiji (released internationally as The Mole Song: Undercover Agent Reiji), premiered in 2014. It was followed by a sequel, Mogura no Uta: Hong Kong Kyosokyoku (The Mole Song: Hong Kong Capriccio), in 2016. A third and final film, Mogura no Uta: FINAL, was released in 2021. Takahashi has expressed satisfaction with the film adaptations, noting that director Miike remained faithful to the original characters and the comedic spirit of the manga. In an interview, Takahashi has stated that evoking laughter and emotion in the audience is a fundamental element of his work, serving as a universal point of connection. He also cited the long-running manga Minami no Teijo as an inspiration for the tone of Mogura no Uta.
