Description
Kana Akatsuki is a Japanese writer, primarily known for her work as a light novel author. She is a female writer from Hokkaido, Japan. She made her literary debut in 2015 with the novel Violet Evergarden, which was published by Kyoto Animation under their KA Esuma Bunko imprint. Before its publication, the manuscript won the grand prize in the novel category of the fifth Kyoto Animation Awards in 2014, marking the first time a work had received a grand prize in that contest.
The Violet Evergarden series follows a young ex-soldier who becomes an Auto Memory Doll, a ghostwriter who helps others express their feelings in letters. The series was published over four volumes from December 2015 to March 2020, with illustrations by Akiko Takase. The success of the light novels led to a significant multimedia franchise. A 13-episode anime television series adaptation, produced by Kyoto Animation, aired between January and April 2018. This was followed by an original video animation episode, a spin-off film titled Violet Evergarden: Eternity and the Auto Memory Doll in 2019, and a sequel film, Violet Evergarden: The Movie, in 2020. The anime series won the award for Best Animation at the Crunchyroll Anime Awards in 2019.
Following the success of her debut, Akatsuki began a new light novel series titled Agents of the Four Seasons. The first storyline in this series is called Dance of Spring. The novels are illustrated by Suoh, and the official English edition is published by Yen Press. The story is a fantasy romance in which divine avatars of the four seasons work to circulate the seasons, following the Agent of Spring as she returns after a ten-year disappearance. A television anime adaptation of Agents of the Four Seasons: Dance of Spring was announced, with animation production handled by WIT Studio. The anime is scheduled to premiere in March 2026.
Akatsuki's work is characterized by detailed, delicate prose and a writing style influenced by girls' novels and children's literature. A recurring element in her writing is a love for flowers, which is reflected in the names of many characters in both Violet Evergarden and Agents of the Four Seasons. Beyond her light novel series, she has also contributed scenario writing for downloadable content of the video game Sword Art Online: Alicization Lycoris.
