Yasutaka Fujimi
Description
Yasutaka Fujimi is a Japanese manga writer, manga original creator, and freelance writer born in Gifu Prefecture. His career in the manga industry began in his mid-twenties when he received an honorable mention in Kodansha's Weekly Shonen Magazine Newcomer Award and subsequently published several one-shot stories in the same magazine, though these did not lead to a serialized series. Fujimi's professional background includes experience working in a consumer electronics retail store, and he is noted for having a deep knowledge of both home appliances and insects, a combination that has informed several of his creative works.
Fujimi is best known as the original creator of The Island of Giant Insects, a survival horror manga series. The story, which focuses on a group of high school students stranded on an island after a plane crash who must fight for their lives against an ecosystem of monstrously oversized insects, was first serialized on Akita Shoten's Champion Cross web platform from October 2014 to May 2018 before moving to the Manga Cross website. The original series was collected into six tankōbon volumes, with the artwork initially provided by the illustration unit Redice and later by Shu Hirose. The success of the property led to an expansion of the franchise, for which Fujimi served as the writer on a sequel series, Die! The Island of Giant Insects, and a spin-off, Mountain of Giant Insects, both of which also began serialization in 2019.
His other notable works as a manga writer include Vector Case File, serialized from 2006 to 2010, and Kaden Tantei wa Shizuka ni Warau, serialized from 2011 to 2013, reflecting his interest in both insect biology and consumer electronics. An earlier work, Kuwadou, which was serialized from 2001 to 2011, is notable as a title for which Fujimi is credited with both the story and the artwork.
The Island of Giant Insects received an anime adaptation, marking Fujimi's most prominent involvement in the anime industry. An original animation DVD produced by the studio Passione was bundled with the sixth volume of the manga in June 2019, serving as a prologue to a larger project. This was followed by a full-length anime film adaptation, produced by the same main staff and studio, which premiered in Japanese theaters in January 2020.
A recurring theme in Fujimi's work as a creator is a focus on insects, often within the context of survival and horror narratives. His personal expertise in entomology is frequently woven into the plots of his manga, where characters use entomological knowledge as a key element for survival. In the anime industry, Fujimi is primarily recognized for his role as the original creator and writer of the source material for The Island of Giant Insects franchise. The adaptation of this work, which included a prologue OAD, a theatrical film, and a sustained expansion of the manga universe through sequels and spin-offs, represents his most significant industry contribution to date.
