Sumiko Fuji is a celebrated Japanese actress whose career spans over six decades, though her work as a voice actor represents a small, notable part of her extensive filmography. Born December 1, 1945, she began her career in the early 1960s under the stage name Junko Fuji, quickly rising to fame as a leading star in yakuza films for Toei Studios, often appearing opposite legends like Ken Takakura. She became particularly iconic for her lead role in the Red Peony Gambler film series. After marrying in 1972, she retired from acting but later returned to the screen in 1989, adopting the name Sumiko Fuji under which she continues to perform and has expanded her repertoire to include a wide variety of maternal and character roles in film and television.

While primarily known for her live-action performances, Fuji has contributed her voice to two major animated feature films. In the 2009 science fiction film Summer Wars, directed by Mamoru Hosoda, she voiced the pivotal role of Sakae Jinnouchi, the strong-willed matriarch of the extended Jinnouchi family. A decade later, she took on another voice role in the 2019 fantasy film Children of the Sea, where she voiced the character Dede.

Throughout her distinguished acting career, Sumiko Fuji has received numerous accolades, including the Blue Ribbon Award for Best Supporting Actress on two occasions, in 1999 and 2006. Her extensive body of work also includes critically acclaimed films such as Hula Girls, Air Doll, and Lady Maiko.
