Yūji Terajima

Description
Yūji Terajima is a Japanese manga artist born on May 10, 1974, in Mannō, Kagawa Prefecture. His interest in baseball began at an early age, as he played the sport throughout his elementary, junior high, and high school years. A left-handed pitcher, he was reportedly able to throw a ball at 130 kilometers per hour during his high school career, and anecdotes from this period have been featured in the margins of his manga volumes. After being influenced by a manga during his university years, he decided to pursue a career as a manga artist and moved to Tokyo following his graduation.

Terajima began his professional path by winning the Monthly Magazine Newcomer Award and the 62nd Magazine Newcomer Manga Award for his work Member in 1999. He subsequently gained experience as an assistant to several established manga creators, including Rando Ayamine on the series Get Backers, where he worked alongside future Soul Eater creator Atsushi Ohkubo. His early serialized work included Giant Step, which ran in Magazine SPECIAL from 2002 to 2004, as well as several one-shot baseball stories such as Hashi no Shita no Batman in 2003 and Maboroshi no Koshien in 2005.

Terajima is best known as the writer and illustrator of the enduring baseball manga Diamond no Ace (known as Ace of Diamond). The series began serialization in Kodansha’s Weekly Shōnen Magazine in 2006 and concluded its first part in 2015, spanning 47 collected volumes. Its success was recognized with the 53rd Shogakukan Manga Award in the shōnen category in 2008. He continued the story with the sequel, Diamond no Ace Act II, which was serialized from 2015 to 2022 and compiled into 31 volumes.

The Diamond no Ace franchise has seen extensive adaptation into other media. The original manga was adapted into an anime series produced by Madhouse and Production I.G, with a first season of 75 episodes airing from 2013 to 2015 and a second season of 51 episodes from 2015 to 2016. The sequel manga, Diamond no Ace Act II, was also adapted into a 52-episode anime by Madhouse, which aired from 2019 to 2020. Beyond the main series, Terajima has been credited as the original creator for spinoff works set in the same universe, including the comedic baseball series Daiya no B!! and its sequel, which focus on the school’s brass band club.

Throughout his career, Terajima’s work has been consistently defined by the theme of baseball, a sport he has been passionate about since his own youth. His artistic identity is closely tied to the long-running Diamond no Ace franchise, which has become a significant work in the sports manga genre. The series’ industry significance is underscored by its prestigious awards, its long serialization run, and its expansion into a multi-part anime franchise and various spinoff media.
