Deborah Sale Butler is an American voice actor and speech and dialect coach known for her work in anime animation and video games. She was born on October 31, 1964, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and later relocated to California to pursue a career in voiceover work. Her professional background also includes experience as a morning show host, radio commercial copywriter, stand-up comic, and improviser. She is perhaps best recognized by anime fans as the voice of Cecile Croomy, the intelligent and supportive engineer for the Black Knights, a role she originated in the series Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion and later reprised for the movie Code Geass: Lelouch of the Re;surrection. Another significant lead role was as Layla Ashley in the series Avenger. In the mecha genre, she also provided the voice for Shute in SD Gundam Force and took on the lead role of Mai Shibamura in Gunparade March. Her other anime credits include Chitose Tateyama in Buso Renkin, various roles in Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, and additional voices in projects like Appleseed and Marmalade Boy. Beyond anime, Butler's voice can be heard across a wide spectrum of video games. Her extensive list of credits includes roles in major franchises such as World of Warcraft and EverQuest, as well as specific characters in games like Slave Zero, Heavy Gear 2, Rising Zan: The Samurai Gunman, and World of Final Fantasy.
