Gō Wakabayashi
Description
Gō Wakabayashi is a Japanese film and television actor known for his extensive work in jidaigeki (period dramas) and contemporary detective series, rather than a dedicated anime voice actor. He was born Hisaaki Moritake on September 5, 1939 in Nagasaki, Japan. A graduate of Senshu University, he began his acting career after joining the theatrical troupe Shin Kokugeki and later established his own promotions company before becoming affiliated with Toho Entertainment.
Wakabayashi gained prominence in the early 1970s, making his first appearance in an NHK taiga drama in 1970 before taking significant roles in major historical productions. He portrayed Sanada Yukimura in two separate taiga dramas, Tokugawa Ieyasu in 1983 and Dokuganryū Masamune in 1987, and later appeared in Tobu ga Gotoku in 1990. His career in period television includes roles as numerous historical figures such as Katsu Kaishū, Kondō Isami, and Yagyū Jūbei Mitsuyoshi.
One of his notable guest roles came in the 1973 television adaptation of Lone Wolf and Cub, where he appeared in an episode as Yamada Asaemon. This character, also known as Kubikiri Asa or the Decapitator Asaemon, is the protagonist of the Samurai Executioner manga series by Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima, set in the same universe as Lone Wolf and Cub. In the story that crosses over between the two series, Yamada Asaemon is ordered to confront Ogami Ittō, leading to a duel that ends with Asaemon's death. Wakabayashi's portrayal of this role placed him within one of the most influential samurai narratives in manga and television history.
During the mid-1970s, Wakabayashi expanded into contemporary roles, most notably playing a detective in the long-running police drama G-Men '75, where he had a regular prime-time slot from episodes 105 to 335, co-starring with Tetsurō Tamba. The pair reprised their roles in the sequel series G-Men '82. Throughout his career, he has continued to appear frequently in television specials and two-hour dramas, often portraying detectives, as well as making guest appearances in variety shows and commercials. His later television work includes roles in series such as The Queen of Lunchtime Cuisine, Tenchijin, BOSS, and Cold Case Season 3, along with film appearances including Musashi in 2019 and Baian the Assassin, M.D. in 2023. No information is available regarding specific anime voice acting credits for Gō Wakabayashi, as his documented work consists almost entirely of live-action film and television performances.
