Nobuhiko Horie
Description
Nobuhiko Horie, born August 17, 1955 in Kumamoto Prefecture, is a Japanese manga editor, writer, and business executive whose career has significantly influenced the industry. After graduating from Waseda University's Faculty of Law, he joined the publishing giant Shueisha in 1979. As an editor for Weekly Shonen Jump, he played a crucial behind-the-scenes role in shaping major hits, working closely with renowned artists like Tetsuo Hara, Tsukasa Hojo, and Hisashi Eguchi. He rose to become the magazine's fifth editor-in-chief in 1993, a period that saw Jump achieve record-breaking circulation numbers.
Beyond his editorial work, Horie is a credited creator in his own right, often collaborating closely with artist Tetsuo Hara. He is frequently listed as a co-creator or writer on projects set in the Fist of the North Star universe. Notably, he is credited for the original manga Souten no Ken: Re:Genesis, which serves as the basis for the anime series Fist of the Blue Sky Regenesis and its sequel. This prequel story was a collaborative effort, with Horie and writer Buronson handling the story while Hara provided the art. Horie also played a key creative role in the historical action series Gifū Dōdō!! Kanetsugu to Keiji, which was adapted into an anime. For a younger audience, he wrote the story for Mori no Senshi Bonolon under the pen name Kitahara Seibo. This body of work demonstrates a recurring pattern of collaboration, particularly with Tetsuo Hara, and a focus on action-oriented narratives, from martial arts epics to samurai dramas.
In 2000, Horie left Shueisha to co-found the publishing company Coamix Inc. alongside Tetsuo Hara and Tsukasa Hojo, serving as its representative director. Through Coamix, he launched new magazines like Weekly Comic Bunch and Monthly Comic Zenon, continuing to discover and nurture new talent while also creating his own manga. His significance in the industry lies not only in his own original works but in his enduring impact as an editor who helped define the golden era of Weekly Shonen Jump and as a publisher who established a successful independent company.
