Asami is credited as the illustrator for the original novel series Waka Okami wa Shōgakusei!, which serves as the source material for the anime projects Okko's Inn and Waka Okami wa Shōgakusei!. The novel series was written by Hiroko Reijō and published by Kodansha under its Aoi Tori Bunko imprint, with twenty volumes released between 2003 and 2013.

Asami’s artistic work established the visual foundation for the characters and world that would later be adapted into other media. A manga adaptation illustrated by Eiko Ōuchi was serialized in Kodansha’s shōjo magazine Nakayoshi from 2006 to 2012, and an anime television series produced by DLE and Madhouse aired in 2018. An anime film adaptation, also produced by DLE and Madhouse, was released in 2018 and received recognition including an Excellence Award at the Japan Media Arts Festival. The film was also nominated for an Annie Award for Best Animated Feature – Independent.

Asami’s role as the original illustrator for the novel series marks the beginning of the franchise, with subsequent adaptations building upon the character designs and visual aesthetic first established through these illustrations.
