GoRA
Description
GoRA is a Japanese creative collective of seven novelists, formed for the purpose of developing original anime and manga projects. The group was established in 2010, initiated by novelist Miyazawa Tatsuo, who first recruited writers Azano Kouhei and Furuhashi Hideyuki before the other four members joined. The collective operates as a unit under the GoRA name, with each member historically using a color as a code name for their contributions. The seven members are Miyazawa Tatsuo (Red), Kabei Yukako (Yellow), Takahashi Yashichiro (Black), Azano Kouhei (Green), Furuhashi Hideyuki (Blue), Suzuki Suzu (Orange), and Kuraku Zero (Pink). Many of these writers had established careers prior to forming GoRA; Takahashi is known for creating the Shakugan no Shana series, Azano for Tokyo Ravens and Black Blood Brothers, and Kabei won the ninth Dengeki Game Novel Award for her debut work.
GoRA first gained public attention with the original anime project K, produced in collaboration with animation studio GoHands and music label King Records. The group was initially presented anonymously, using only their color codenames and taking turns managing the official K social media accounts. Their identities were later revealed through credits in related novels, manga, and Blu-ray materials. For the K franchise, GoRA collectively handled the original story, series composition, and scripts across multiple installments. This includes the first television series in 2012, the theatrical film K: Missing Kings in 2014, the second television series K: Return of Kings in 2015, and the six-part theatrical project K: Seven Stories, which was released in 2018 and included segments adapting their own novel and manga works such as R:B, SIDE:BLUE, Lost Small World, and Memory of Red. The franchise also featured the short The Idol K. Beyond their work on the animated productions, members of GoRA individually authored a series of companion novels expanding on the K universe, including K SIDE:BLUE, K SIDE:RED, K SIDE:BLACK & WHITE, K -Lost Small World-, and K -R:B-. They also served as original story writers or supervisors for numerous manga adaptations and spin-offs based on the franchise, such as K: Memory of Red, K: Days of Blue, K: Countdown, and the manga K: Dream of Green.
Following the conclusion of the K series, GoRA continued to develop original anime projects. In 2023, the collective created Ayaka: A Story of Bonds and Wounds, a twelve-episode television series produced by Studio Blanc and King Records. GoRA is credited with the original work and the series scripts. The series was accompanied by a spin-off manga, Ayaka: Muzzle Flash Back, with GoRA credited as the original writer. The group has also been credited as the original creator for other manga works, including K: Beautiful Pieces, the fantasy manga Promise no Frontline, and Billion Dollar Slave.
The artistic identity of GoRA is rooted in its collaborative structure, bringing together multiple established novelists to build expansive multimedia franchises. Their work is characterized by a focus on original stories that are developed across anime, manga, and novels simultaneously, often with complex world-building and large casts of characters. The group has maintained a consistent partnership with the music label King Records across their major projects. Their significance in the industry lies in this model of a writer collective dedicated specifically to original anime and manga creation, rather than adapting pre-existing light novels or manga. This approach was central to the success of the K franchise, which became a significant multimedia property spanning anime films, stage plays, and numerous spin-off publications.
