Caroline Ebner is a German actress and voice artist born on May 24, 1970, in Gräfelfing near Munich. She began her career with a strong focus on theater, studying acting at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen from 1990 to 1993. Early in her stage career, she garnered significant critical acclaim, winning the Alfred Kerr Prize for her portrayal of Julia in a Düsseldorf production of Romeo and Juliet in 1994. Her theater work has included long-standing engagements with prestigious companies such as the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg and the Münchner Kammerspiele. Beyond the stage, Ebner has built an extensive film and television career, appearing in numerous productions including the long-running ZDF series Frühling and various Tatort episodes.
In addition to her on-screen work, Ebner has developed a substantial career as a voice actress, lending her voice to characters in film and television since at least 2013. Her work in this field encompasses dubbing roles for international actors and voice-over work for animated projects. A significant portion of her voice acting is dedicated to German-language dubs of English-language live-action films and series.
Her most prominent credit in the realm of anime is the role of Queen Serenity in the German dubs of the Sailor Moon remake projects. Ebner first voiced the character in the series Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal, which aired from 2014 to 2016. She reprised this role for the two-part film Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Eternal, with the German dub being released in 2021. In both the series and the film, she provides the German voice for the Japanese seiyū Mami Koyama. This role connects her to a globally recognized and beloved anime franchise. Aside from her work on Sailor Moon, her other voice credits include dubbing the character Lisa Hesselman, originally voiced by Jennifer Jason Leigh, in the 2015 animated film Anomalisa. She has also provided German voices for a wide range of characters in series such as Once Upon a Time, 12 Monkeys, and Fleabag. Her work in dubbing demonstrates a recurring collaboration with the Japanese voice actress Mami Koyama, as she has voiced several of Koyama's characters in German, most notably Queen Serenity.
While her career is distinguished by numerous honors for her stage and screen acting, including a nomination for the German Film Award for Best Leading Actress in 1999, her work as a voice artist has made her the definitive German voice for the character of Queen Serenity in the modern Sailor Moon adaptations.
